The world of football was stunned when the great Lionel Messi left Spanish La Liga side Barcelona to sign for French club Paris Saint Germain (PSG) last summer. Messi left Barcelona after the Catalan giants were unable to accommodate his salary on their wage bill due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules in La Liga. PSG gave Lionel Messi a two-year deal with the option for a third year when he signed for them as a free agent at the start of the just concluded season.
For his debut season at PSG, Messi didn't perform as expected considering the heights reached during his time at Barcelona. He had spent around 15 years in the first team at Barcelona. Despite his average season, the petite Argentine was still able to record 25 goal contributions. Messi scored 11 goals and provided 14 assists for PSG in his first season at the club. Six of his goals came in the French top flight, while the other five goals were scored in the Champions League.
There are a lot of reasons behind the average season Messi had at PSG and they include Covid-19, injury and adapting to a new environment.
Football stats outlet Squawkarecently released the goal contributions for the best players over the last decade and the list was topped by Lionel Messi. The PSG superstar finished ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski at the top of the list.
